Wood fences are very popular here in Polk County, but unfortunately, over time they deteriorate and succumb to our environmental conditions. The day will come when it will need to be replaced.
Does your fence need to be replaced? Look for these signs
Damaged or Broken Boards
Damaged or broken boards may be the most visible signs it is time for a new fence. Normal wear and tear, combined with our heat, humidity, thunderstorms and hurricanes, takes a toll. While a few boards can be replaced relatively easily, if the damage is more widespread, it may be more cost effective to have the fence replaced. Damaged boards are a good sign the fence is past its prime and can even be structurally unsound.
Sagging or Leaning Fence
Another sign it is time to replace your fence is when it starts sagging or leaning. This is typically the time a fence has become structurally compromised. Fences can start to lean for several reasons, shallow pilot holes, posts that have become rotten, improperly installed posts, weather conditions, aging materials, and natural inclines.
Insect Damage
Insect damage can be detrimental to a wood fence. Central Florida has its fair share of termites, carpenter ants, and wood boring beetles, that can damage and threaten the structural integrity of any wood. Signs include boring, gnawing, and holes in the fence. Catching damage and infestation early and eliminating the insect can reduce the damage.
Total Repair Costs
Weighing the cost of repair or replace your fence can difficult one. Making several different repairs can end up costing more than having the entire fence replaced. A good place to start is by inspecting your fence.
